Shelves rated for what you'll actually put on them
The failure mode for shelving is predictable: it holds fine for a year, then somebody stacks paint cans on it. Sizing brackets and anchors for real load, not showroom load, is most of the job.
Space you didn't know you had
Overhead garage racks, a second closet rod, shelves above the washer and dryer. Same square footage, dramatically more usable — and it's cheaper than moving.
Built to the room you have
Pensacola houses are not square, especially older ones. Site-built shelving gets scribed to the wall that exists rather than leaving a wedge-shaped gap that a boxed kit would.

Measure and talk about what's going on it
Pantry cans, storage totes, kayaks, and a book collection are four different builds. What lives there drives depth, spacing, and load.
Pick the system honestly
Sometimes a wire kit from the big-box store is genuinely the right answer and I'll say so. Sometimes it's a site-built plywood-and-cleat system that costs a bit more and outlasts the house.
Find framing, then build
Cleats and brackets into studs or properly rated anchors, level across the run, ends scribed to the wall.
Load it and clean up
We put weight on it before I leave. Sawdust and offcuts go with me — a garage build shouldn't leave you with a garage to sweep.

Garage heat and humidity
Gulf Coast garages get hot and damp. Untreated MDF sags; plywood and treated cleats don't. That choice matters more here than it does up north.
Overhead racks need real framing
Ceiling-mounted storage has to land in structure and be rated for the load. This is one of the few small jobs with a genuine safety consequence, so it's one I won't shortcut.
